Based in Plymouth, Yellow Brick Road is an early childhood development center rooted in the belief that every child deserves a safe place to learn, explore, and grow. To further this sacred mission, Yellow Brick Road decided to open a second location in Minnetonka. We were honored to help make it happen.
Our Approach
As general contractor, our job was to transform a 14,000-square-foot office building into a premier child care center. We got to work upgrading the building’s mechanicals and plumbing work, and building out a commercial kitchen, large indoor gym, 11 classrooms, and two outdoor play areas.
We were able to incorporate several of the architectural elements left behind by the previous owner, including a nicely appointed reception area and conference room, into the new floor plan. Perhaps the most notable reused element was the building’s unique 15-foot-wide ceiling fan—it made for a fantastic addition to the gym! We also made numerous energy code updates throughout the building to reduce its energy usage.
Child care centers, as you might expect, are strongly regulated, particularly the materials used to build them. To keep the project moving forward, we coordinated the approval of these (in conjunction with the architect) by serving as the middleman between our client and the city.
The Results
The project wrapped up as scheduled in August, giving Yellow Brick Road a beautiful, enriching new space before the hustle-bustle of fall began.
